I’ve always thought the logic behind including the Song of Solomon in the Bible was suspect. It’s a beautiful story of young love. I’ve often used verses from the book at Weddings. Theologically, it is suppose to represent the church as the bride of Christ.
My skepticism aside, I’m grateful the early church found a way to justify it’s presence among the books of the Bible. Yesterday, when I read, “My beloved is mine and I am his; he browses among the lilies.” Song of Solomon 2:16 it seemed like a message to get out of my house, and browse among some lilies. Tired of hearing bad news, I went to my favorite getaway, at the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum where I could enjoy some solace in blooms of spring.
Flowers lift my spirits. They don’t send zingers my way, or do they shout political slogans at me. They just are. Not working at all . . . they spread beauty in the world. Asking little of us, but to simply appreciate their existence, they are indeed, treasures of Spring.
Flowers appear on the earth;
the season of singing has come,
the cooing of doves
is heard in our land.
Song of Solomon 2:12
