I shall dwell in the house of the Lord Forever

May 13, 2025 by Shirley Hobson Duncanson

I Shall Dwell in the House of the Lord Forever

“Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever. ” Psalm 23:6

Patrick Miller says of Psalm 23, “The psalmist offers a song of trust of someone who knows in the midst of the vicissitudes of her or his personal life and over the course of years that he or she has been carried in the bosom of God, sheltered from harm and given rest. ” *

David writes about dwelling in the house of the Lord. But just what is this House of the Lord? David didn’t have a temple, only a tent to worship in. So is the house of the Lord a building . . . A fellowship or community of believers? Is this House of the Lord, the community of saints created at our baptism? Or was David thinking of dwelling in the presence of God?    Whatever was in his thoughts the day he penned these words, their power has not diminished with the centuries.

David could not have envisioned the profound impact his poem would have through millennia’s of time. He could not have guessed millions upon millions of people, would find comfort in his words. Or in listening would find assurance and strength there. He would have had no comprehension of the lasting power of his simple words, written  while he reflected on his walk with God . . . Or as he expressed the hope he found, whenever darkness threatened to overwhelm him, and  dangers lurked nearby.

We continue to be sustained by the Psalm’s promise, that whatever we may experience in life, we are never far from God’s heart. For the one who leads us beside still waters,  chooses to journey beside us.  Then is present to guide us through life’s difficult passages, and to celebrate us, even when enemies attack.   Dwelling in the House of the Lord, we rest in the assurance of God’s everlasting love.

John Rogers sums up the promise of Psalm 23 when he says, “Christ promised to remain with us as the Good Shepherd even to the end of time, so that in life and in death we may be confident that we belong not to the powers of evil, sin, and death, but to him of whom we can say with confidence and trust, the ‘Lord is my shepherd.'”**

A Beacon of Light in a Sea of Chaos

“Though you were once darkness now as Christians you are light. Prove yourself at home in the light. For where light is there is a harvest of goodness, righteousness, and truth. Learn to judge for yourself what is pleasing to the Lord; take no part in the barren needs of darkness, but show them up […]

Anchored in Hope – Quieting the Anxious Heart

God said, “Strike the rock, and water will come out of it, so that the people may drink.” Moses did so, in the sight of the elders of Israel. He called the place Massah and Meribah, because the Israelites quarreled and tested the Lord, saying, ‘Is the Lord among us or not?’” Exodus 17:6-7 Moses […]

In the Shadow of War, Hearing God’s Heart for Peace

I had so many questions about “The why,” and “Why now?,” as bombs began to fall over the weekend? Days later,  justifications continue to change for, “The why,”  the United States joined Israel, to attack and wage war against Iran. Rumors circulate  war with Iran was started, to set off events throughout the Middle East, […]

Nicodemus and the Whispering Winds of the Spirit

“Very truly, I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God without being born from above.” John 3:3 Nicodemus was a seeker, a person searching for the truth about God. We first meet him in an encounter with Jesus, as he visits Jesus  in the night time. Nicodemus is a scholar, a student […]

The Irony of ICE Actions Against Christians

“We will protect Christians in our schools, in our military, in our government, in our workplaces, hospitals, and in our public squares,” When President Trump took office a year ago, he promised to protect Christians. He claimed Christians were a persecuted group of people, and he was their protector. Yet, the greatest persecutor of Christians […]

Jesus and the Ministering Angels

“Coming up out of the water, Jesus saw the heavens opening, and the Spirit like a dove descending upon Him; and a voice came out of the heavens: “You are My beloved Son, in You I am well-pleased.” Immediately the Spirit impelled Him to go out into the wilderness. And He was in the wilderness […]

Witnessing the Holy: Light for a Murky World

I find it hard to argue with another person’s experience. Peter, James, and John, we’re on the holy mountain with Jesus, when God’s radiance met their fragile humanity,  where vision and reality clashed. As described in II Peter, “It was not on tales, however cleverly concocted, that we relied when we told you about the […]
