Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me

May 4, 2022 by Shirley Hobson Duncanson

Cups Running Over

Come to the Table

The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
He maketh me to lie down in green pastures:
he leadeth me beside the still waters.
He restoreth my soul:
he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness
for his name’s sake. Psalm 23:1-3 KJV

I’m not sure what mental block it is, but for reasons I do not understand, the phrase “He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness,” eludes my memory when I repeat the 23rd Psalm, I memorized as a child.

This treasured psalm is read at hospital bedsides, funerals and in moments of trial.  To quiet anxious thoughts, some of us, will repeat the words as we are falling asleep. Reminding ourselves, that whatever the current situation, we have a Shepherd who cares for and about us.

Pastor John Rogers asks, “What might it do to our understanding of God, and to the way we live with life’s joy and sorrows, if we took seriously that God always takes the initiative with us -a shepherd leading us towards himself, following us in our wanderings, so that we never get beyond the Love that will not let us go?” (Feasting on the Word, Year C, Volume 2, Pg 434)

I like that John Rogers points out, “God always takes the initiative” in the leading. While we might be telling ourselves we are searching for guidance and wisdom, God is already nudging us to ask the questions. Questions which will lead us to God sized answers.

The Twenty-third  Psalm  speaks to us in times of exhaustion, as we are  desperately needing a place of still waters and green pastures to rest in. It speaks when days are dark and we are frightened, walking through a valley where both death and danger lurk.

The psalm speaks again, on days of celebration, when we are safe on the other side of danger, with cups overflowing, feasting on the grace and goodness of our Shepherd God.

With a confidence borne of experience, the psalmist concludes:

“Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
all the days of my life:
and I will dwell in the house
of the Lord for ever.” Psalm 23:5-6 KJV

Our psalm writer knew that God has never promised us an easy life. What God has promised is to be with us  and love us in every part of life. Then, when our days here are over, is there to welcome us into an eternal home.  Indeed, our cups do run over with grace, even as we are led on the “Paths of righteousness.”

Every Life Precious – Remembering 9/11

A Facebook meme suggests, “The best way to honor  those lost on 9/11, is to be the people we were on 9/12.” Twenty-five years ago, I was serving a church, in a small City nestled along the Mississippi River, far from the 9/11 attacks in New York, Washington, and Pennsylvania. Still, the terrorist attacks destroyed […]

A Pandora’s Box of Power, Greed, and Indifference

Some days, I don’t know what is troubling me more, about the current administration in Washington.  It feels like the cosmic powers of darkness have been set loose among us, a Pandora’s box of greed, hypocrisy, and indifference to the suffering in this world. There is an appalling lack of morality, and too few willing […]

A Burning Bush, a Holy Calling

Then Moses said, “I must turn aside and look at this great sight and see why the bush is not burned up.” When the Lord saw that he had turned aside to see, God called to him out of the bush, “Moses, Moses!” And he said, “Here I am.” Then the Lord said, “Come no […]

The Quiet Resistance of Shiphrah and Puah

“Pharaoh, the king of Egypt said to the Hebrew midwives, one of whom was named Shiphrah and the other Puah, ‘When you act as midwives to the Hebrew women and see them on the birthstool, if it is a son, kill him, but if it is a daughter, she shall live.’ But the midwives feared […]

Mercy Has No Boundaries

Then Jesus asked, “Which one of these three people was a real neighbor to the man who was beaten up by robbers?” The expert in the Law of Moses answered, “The one who showed mercy on him.” Jesus said, “Go and do the same!” Luke 10:36-37 Jack was probably one of the most honest church […]

Joseph – God Rewriting a Difficult Story

“Joseph said to his brothers, . . . “I am your brother, Joseph, whom you sold into Egypt. And now do not be distressed or angry with yourselves because you sold me here, for God sent me before you to preserve life.’” Genesis 45:4-5 “You tried to harm me, but God made it turn out […]

Dr. Fauci, King Solomon, and the Need for Wisdom in Washington

The Lord appeared to Solomon at Gibeon in a dream at night. God said, “Ask whatever you wish, and I’ll give it to you.” I Kings 3:5 The newly anointed King Solomon does not ask for great things from God. Not money, or power, or fame or any of the other accompanying pleasures that come […]
