Goodness and Mercy will pursue me

Surely Goodness and Mercy

Lenten Rose, MN Landscape Arboretum April 11, 2024

“Surely goodness and mercy shall follow be all the days of my life.” Psalm 23:6a NRSV

On sleepless nights, I often recite the 23rd Psalm. It’s message of comfort and reassurance calms my spirit, and allows me to rest in the assurance that I am held by one who loves and cares for me. There is a sense that whatever troubles or concerns are keeping me awake, can be trusted to my Shepherd God.

The psalmist writes “Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me, all the days of my life.” The word the Psalmist uses for follow is not simply following along, or trailing behind a person, but is an active pursuit. God’s love  is a pursuing love, drawing us to goodness and places of loving kindness.

This is the Shepherd who goes before us and leads us to places of Grace, places of rest, places where we will know love and compassion . . . Places where the mercy of God is shown through the care of others.

Gary V. Simpson writes, “The goodness of God is in every place before we ever arrive at any particular place. The good things that happen to us along life’s journey do not happen because we have arrived. God’s goodness has already been where we are planning to go. The goodness of God is so present that every direction that we turn to look, wherever we are, we bump into goodness again.” (Feasting on the Word: Year B, Volume 2, pg 440)

The psalmist understood God as one who shepherds us through all of life, wants what is good for us, and draws us to those places that are the very, very best for each of us. Should we wander afar, our Shepherd God will go in pursuit, drawing us back to the path which  leads to life.

“Indeed, goodness and mercy will pursue me
all the days of my life.”  Psalm 23:6 NAB

After the Assassination: We Heal Only When We See Each Other

On June 14th, a year ago, when some of the country was celebrating the president’s birthday at a military parade, and a whole lot of other people, we’re protesting the president at No King’s rallies, my state woke up to the horrific news of an assassination, and assassination attempt on state legislators. The year has […]

Resort Roots – The Fish, the Lake, and the Lessons We Didn’t Know We Were Learning

“When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars that you have established;what are humans that you are mindful of them, mortals that you care for them?” Psalm 8:3-4 I don’t know if my parents ever intentionally tried to teach us to be environmentalists. Still, life on the family resort […]

The Divine Image: Embracing Our Shared Humanity

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. And the earth was formless and empty, and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.” Genesis 1:1-2 “So God created humankind in God’s  own image. In the image of God, God […]

Pentecost – Holy Spirit’s Flaming Arrival

Pentecost, the day when tongues like fire rest on heads, and friends of Jesus, speak in languages they do not know. Every person in that international gathering, hears the wonderful things God has done through Jesus, in their native tongue. It is a startling event to find yourself a part of. Amazed, confused, astonished, perplexed […]

“It Is Well with My Soul” A Journey of Grief and Grace

Jesus – Standing with the Underside

“The Lord announced his victory; he made his saving power known to the nations.” Psalm 98:2 Psalm 98 celebrates God’s victory, a victory displayed in saving righteousness to all the nations.
