Sleepless nights

Surely Goodness and Mercy

Lenten Rose, MN Landscape Arboretum April 11, 2024

“Surely goodness and mercy shall follow be all the days of my life.” Psalm 23:6a NRSV

On sleepless nights, I often recite the 23rd Psalm. It’s message of comfort and reassurance calms my spirit, and allows me to rest in the assurance that I am held by one who loves and cares for me. There is a sense that whatever troubles or concerns are keeping me awake, can be trusted to my Shepherd God.

The psalmist writes “Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me, all the days of my life.” The word the Psalmist uses for follow is not simply following along, or trailing behind a person, but is an active pursuit. God’s love  is a pursuing love, drawing us to goodness and places of loving kindness.

This is the Shepherd who goes before us and leads us to places of Grace, places of rest, places where we will know love and compassion . . . Places where the mercy of God is shown through the care of others.

Gary V. Simpson writes, “The goodness of God is in every place before we ever arrive at any particular place. The good things that happen to us along life’s journey do not happen because we have arrived. God’s goodness has already been where we are planning to go. The goodness of God is so present that every direction that we turn to look, wherever we are, we bump into goodness again.” (Feasting on the Word: Year B, Volume 2, pg 440)

The psalmist understood God as one who shepherds us through all of life, wants what is good for us, and draws us to those places that are the very, very best for each of us. Should we wander afar, our Shepherd God will go in pursuit, drawing us back to the path which  leads to life.

“Indeed, goodness and mercy will pursue me
all the days of my life.”  Psalm 23:6 NAB

The “High” of Anger, Addicted to Rage

I was struck by a comment that Rich Logis made recently.  Rich  is the founder of the nonprofit, “Leaving MAGA.” He described his time in the MAGA universe as, “It was exhilarating and enthralling, until it wasn’t. When I left, I came to realize that I had essentially been addicted to rage.”  Anger and rage […]

A Precious Sight in the Lord’s Eyes

“So here’s what I want you to do, God helping you: Take your everyday, ordinary life—your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around life—and place it before God as an offering.” Romans 12:2 Message Bible I have officiated at hundreds of funerals in the years of my ministry. A sense of celebration for a life well lived,  […]

Behind Locked Doors, a Sanctuary of Grace

When it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and the doors were locked where the disciples were, for fear of the Religious authorities, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.” After he said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples […]

A Part of God’s Garden

Anyone who knows me for very long, learns that I love flowers. I love all kinds, all varieties, all colors. One of my favorite places is the nearby Minnesota Landscape Arboretum. Even in the midst of winter, I can find flowers blooming in the conservatory. There is something nurturing and healing, being in the presence […]

Easter – The Heartbeat of Eternal Hope

“The angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified.  He is not here; he has risen, just as he said.’” Matthew 28:5-6  My confidence in the arrival of Spring wanes in years of bitter winter nights and sluggish March days.  Yet, even when […]

Ted Loder – A Good Friday Prayer

Holy One, Shock and save me with the terrible goodness of this Friday, And drive me deep into my longing for your kingdom Until I seek it first- Yet not first for myself, But for the hungry And the sick And the poor of your children, For prisoners of conscience around the world, For those […]

Singing Resistance on Palm Sunday

“A bruised reed he will not break, and a smoldering wick he will not snuff out. In faithfulness he will bring forth justice.” Isaiah 42:3 Palm Sunday afternoon, we sang songs of resistance. “We shall Overcome,” “Hold On,” “Swing Low Sweet Chariot,” “Blowing in the Wind,” “I’m Not Afraid.” Some were new and others very […]
