Psalm 23:6

April 17, 2024 by Shirley Hobson Duncanson

Surely Goodness and Mercy

Lenten Rose, MN Landscape Arboretum April 11, 2024

“Surely goodness and mercy shall follow be all the days of my life.” Psalm 23:6a NRSV

On sleepless nights, I often recite the 23rd Psalm. It’s message of comfort and reassurance calms my spirit, and allows me to rest in the assurance that I am held by one who loves and cares for me. There is a sense that whatever troubles or concerns are keeping me awake, can be trusted to my Shepherd God.

The psalmist writes “Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me, all the days of my life.” The word the Psalmist uses for follow is not simply following along, or trailing behind a person, but is an active pursuit. God’s love  is a pursuing love, drawing us to goodness and places of loving kindness.

This is the Shepherd who goes before us and leads us to places of Grace, places of rest, places where we will know love and compassion . . . Places where the mercy of God is shown through the care of others.

Gary V. Simpson writes, “The goodness of God is in every place before we ever arrive at any particular place. The good things that happen to us along life’s journey do not happen because we have arrived. God’s goodness has already been where we are planning to go. The goodness of God is so present that every direction that we turn to look, wherever we are, we bump into goodness again.” (Feasting on the Word: Year B, Volume 2, pg 440)

The psalmist understood God as one who shepherds us through all of life, wants what is good for us, and draws us to those places that are the very, very best for each of us. Should we wander afar, our Shepherd God will go in pursuit, drawing us back to the path which  leads to life.

“Indeed, goodness and mercy will pursue me
all the days of my life.”  Psalm 23:6 NAB

A Moral Crisis – Faith Calls Us to Be Voices for the Voiceless

“God has brought down the powerful from their thrones and lifted up the lowly; God has filled the hungry with good things and sent the rich away empty.” Luke 1:52-53 The Supreme Court’s decision allowing  racial profiling,  to arrest people here illegally, has proven to be exactly what those opposed knew it would be. Springs of Water, for the Weary Heart

“For waters shall break forth in the wilderness and streams in the desert; the burning sand shall become a pool and the thirsty ground springs of water . . .  A highway shall be there, and it shall be called the Holy Way; the unclean shall not travel on it, but it shall be for […]

Embracing the Spirit of Justice During Advent’s Sacred Time

The Justice passages of Advent touch me more acutely this year. I resonate with Howard Thurman’s Christmas poem: Christmas is Waiting to Be Born Where refugees seek deliverance that never comes And the heart consumes itself as if it would live, Where children age before their time And life wears down the edges of the […]

In the Face of Hatred and Warring, Christmas Comes

Advent is a season  set aside to remember Christ’s coming among us and  choosing to be present in our world. In Advent, we pause again to hear the prophesy of God’s tender Compassion. “Because of the tender mercy of our God,     the dawn from on high will break upon us, to shine upon those who […]

God’s Dream for the World

“God will judge between the nations and shall arbitrate for many people; they shall beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation; neither shall they learn war anymore. ” Isaiah 2;4 NRSV Isaiah envisions a time, when both justice and peace exist in every […]

Thanksgiving – Acknowledging Our Roots

One of the paradoxes of life is that we tend to forget God at the very moment when we ought to be most grateful. We are awash with God’s blessing and abundance, yet we tell ourselves that all we have is from our own hard work, our own efforts. Moses knew that as soon as […]

Shepherds Who Betray God’s People

“Woe to the shepherds who destroy and scatter the sheep of my pasture! says the Lord.” Jeremiah 23:1 One of the most disappointing experiences for me as a pastor, has been when a colleague  betrayed the trust of their congregation.
