Environmental Disasters – From Denial to Action

Art by Emmett

Many years ago, I read a science fiction novel, where the Earth had warmed to the extent, hurricanes were reaching speeds of 400 mph. I don’t know if the author was trying to warn us of impending danger, or had just found a good story line. In the novel, oceans had warmed, producing storms with catastrophic consequences.

I forgot about that science fiction novel, until I began to see evidence of a changing climate.   In the years since, people have questioned if Global warming/ Climate change is real. While there are still some, insisting nothing is happening to the climate, those assertions are getting more difficult to claim.

Forecasts from 40 years ago, are rippling through the environment today. Worst case scenarios, expected to come decades from now, have arrived. Oceans are rising, cities are flooding during high tide, storms are getting worse and fires rage across continents.

Last years devastating hurricanes ravaged Eastern states, dumping inches more water inland, than ever before, leaving  death and destruction in their path. Today, Los Angles is in flames, with torrents of fire driven wind, spreading the flames. Tragedy has followed tragedy.

Our weather is no longer dependable. Climate change denial only works for so long. “Pretending,” as a dear friend used to say, “Doesn’t make it so.”  Humanly driven or other driven, the reality of the change is here. As important as the cause behind the change, is to deal with its existence.

There will necessitate a movement from denial to action, preparing for the worst and putting policies in place, to change our future for the better. The best minds, of our nation and the world, will need to work together,  finding  ways to survive the storms of the future . . . While, rectifying  devastating impacts,  we have made to the climate.

I certainly don’t have the answers for that, but I believe there are answers. Because, I have learned, God always provides a way, when there seems no way.

“Lord, your unfailing love reaches to the heavens,
your faithfulness to the skies.
Your righteousness is like the lofty mountains,
your justice like the great deep;
Lord who saves mortal and beast,
how precious is your unfailing love . . .
for with you is the fountain of life,
and by your light we are enlightened.” Psalm 36: 4-5,9
