They are planted in the house of the Lord;
they flourish in the courts of our God. Psalm 92:13
The psalmist points to those who are strong and grounded in their faith, as flourishing in old age.
I’m part of a group of retired clergy, many of whom, are examples of the Psalmist’s words.
Among us are people volunteering in churches, directing choirs, leading studies, giving compassionate care or taking on Interim ministry positions. One is a police chaplain in Minneapolis. Another continues to write, self-publishing his most recent book, well into his late eighties. Some participate or lead mission trips while others focus their energy and time on justice issues, working to alleviate suffering in whatever way they can. Even in the midst of personal sorrows, health constraints and limitations of aging, the flourishing continues. I’m inspired by these colleagues who journey beside me.
I’m reminded we have a choice, whatever our age, whether or not to use our gifts . . . our talents, skills, abilities . . . in ways that enhance the lives of others. It is tempting to say “Enough. I’ve done enough. I don’t need to do anything more.” But that would be to abdicate both our responsibility and waste the gifts God has given us.
In giving of ourselves, we discover staying engaged is a blessing, adding meaning and purpose to our lives . . . receiving far more back, than we give.
The psalmist says it best:
The righteous flourish like a palm tree,
they grow tall as a cedar on Lebanon;
planted in the house of the Lord,
and flourishing in the courts of our God,
they still bear fruit in old age;
they are luxuriant, wide-spreading trees.
They declare that the Lord is just:
my rock, in the Lord there is no unrighteousness.
Psalm 92:12-15 REV

Thank you so much, but I’m very well, actually. Healthy and active. It just takes a lot more work to stay that way than it used to! (Most of my “medical team” is me! 😏) Some would use the term “health nut…” 🙄 Trying to find the balance between an unhealthy lifestyle and obsession – just being a good steward. And grateful. ♥️

Amen, Shirley! I hope I can serve the Lord up until my last breath. Frankly, it’s sometimes frustrating that self care takes up so much if my time these days – doctor appointments, daily physical therapy, etc. But I guess that’s the Lord’s way of keeping me humble in my old age. 🙄 I’m hoping I’m more useful to Him than that healthy, smug, clueless girl I left behind…
